What Are STIs?

An STI (sexually transmitted infection) is also known as an STD (sexually transmitted disease). According to the Centers for Disease Control, 15- to 24-year-olds make up half of all new STIs. STIs are infections passed from one person to another through any sort of sexual contact. This can be done vaginally, orally, or through anal sex. There is also a chance it’s passed by skin-to-skin contact or other intimate physical contacts.

You may have heard of many STIs before, as there are over 20 types, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Genital herpes
  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV/AIDS
  • HPV
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

Many of these infections have no immediate symptoms, but can be easily treated with the correct antibiotics. Even if you don’t have signs of infection, you could still be passing it on to your partner(s).
